Christmas Season 2023

As we move into the Christmas season, the pressures of the holidays and feelings of overwhelm or worry often outweigh the joy and hope we have the blessing to experience. On our recent trip to Cuba, a beautiful picture of joyful giving was displayed to us. During a Sunday church service, the congregants began their time of worship through the giving of tithes and offerings. Without a second thought, a young boy eagerly pulled 200 pesos from his pocket and ran to place them in the tithing plate. This child didn’t hesitate or contemplate withholding this money to buy food or save it for a special treat. With gratitude, he gave back to the Lord what the Lord had given to him.

Countless examples can be shared of the Cuban gratitude and the ways in which the people display thankfulness each day for what the Lord has given them. The humble contentment we observe from our friends and spiritual family in a country devastated by poverty and a lack of basic resources is truly inspiring. One evening, a sister in Christ explained to Molly that every opportunity the Cuban people have to give and serve is an opportunity for joy.

Serving as a translator for the trip, she said to her, “It is a privilege to be used in a way that is bigger than me and serves a greater purpose for God.” A task such as translating is an opportunity for gratitude—what an encouragement to our spirits!

During Advent (the Christmas season), our prayer is that the Lord will bring to mind the many blessings He gives us each and every day. We have great joy and a great hope knowing that our Savior has come and is coming again! How grateful we are that we can worship Him freely!
